Some information about this area

At just 1.2 miles long, the busiest shopping street in Europe is Oxford Street. Each day half a million shoppers visit the street, and this has now resulted in traffic being restricted to just buses and taxis.

Originally a Roman road that connected the areas of Essex and Hampshire, it’s first department stores opened in the early 1900s. HMV, Selfridges and John Lewis brought a new and far more sophisticated way to shop for the most affluent of London residents.

Today, designer outlets can be found amongst the top notch department stores. But there’s more to the street than shopping. It has delectable cuisine, fascinating history and spectacular architecture to view. Although it suffered greatly from the bombings of World War II with many of the buildings being destroyed, it still has some of Thomas Cundy’s masterpieces to see.

Closer to the ground, the ever changing storefront of stores such as Selfridges’ displays the most up to date clothing and home fashions. Innovative but with a sense of fun, these window displays give a flavour of what you’ll find inside the stores.

Practically anything you want to buy can be found on Oxford Street. It’s full of boutique products and luxury brands. Amongst them, you’ll find stores such as Topshop. Billed as the world’s largest fashion store, it brings in an incredible 200,000 shoppers every week between the ages of 14 to 50 years.

Even with the competition of giant shopping centres such as Westfield and Brent Cross, Oxford Street has retained its place as the shoppers’ mecca. When you’re all shopped out, the place to find good food is St Christopher’s Place where you’ll find a diverse collection of cafes, bars and restaurants, just a few steps away from outstanding boutique shopping.
